Best Photography Locations in Vincigliata Castle

The Vincigliata castle is located near the city of Florence, in Vincigliata, shortly after Fiesole. The settlement has quite ancient origins, referring to the year 1000, when there were towers and castles of Visdomini in this area. This was an important family in medieval Florence. The property went hand in hand by changing several owners: first the Usimbardi, then the Ceffini of Figline, then the Bonaccorsi family and later that of the Albizzi. A branch of this last family changed its name to Alexandria, and it is this family that inherited Vincigliata and its affiliated farms. This family kept her property for centuries without, however, enhancing her, even leaving her in abandon and the castle fell into ruin. In the Romantic Age, the ruins of the Castle of Vincigliata attracted and fascinated several artists of the period, who retreated to their works. Even the Alinari Brothers photographed it. It was only in 1850 that a wealthy Englishman decided to recover the ruins of the Castle.

The renovation work lasted for ten years, eventually creating a building which is called Ghotic revival. The big intervention did not only affect the building but extended itself to the surrounding lands, with the introduction of plants suitable for the rocky terrain in the area, such as Lecci Pini and cypress. There is also a legend about the presence of a ghost in the walls of the Castle of Vincigliata. When the castle was owned by the Usimbardi family, the head of the family had a very beautiful daughter named White. His father, jealous, watched her day and night to keep her from attending young people who were unlucky to him.

But despite his efforts, Bianca managed to embark on a love story, even with a member of a rival family, Umberto del Mazzeca. But when the war between Florence and the Lord of Lucca broke out, Castruccio Castracani, the girl’s father parted as a fighter and had a young soldier with the task of protecting him. The boy wanted the father to be saved by this young man, who then found himself to be the young lover of his daughter. The father moved by a sense of gratitude accepted the relationship between the two young men, but fate wanted the father to be killed precisely on the day of the wedding. Bianca died shortly after the tremendous pain. It is said that the ghost returns in the warm summer night.
